Chapter 12
The behemoth dove deep, to depths that would crush a human in seconds. It snatched up various forms of sea life, from sharks, to squid and octopus, to whales, lobsters and crabs, adding them all to its mass. It consumed everything it came across, breaking the prey down and absorbing the parts, as it had the humans, using their brains and their knowledge to help it learn about them.
As it ate, it healed what insignificant damage it had sustained. Its tentacles mended. Its flesh and armor were renewed. It didn’t fully understand why it had gone so deep, for the humans couldn’t hurt it in the water, but somehow it knew it needed to go that far down. It knew the humans could not travel to such depths. It was safe down there, where sunlight could not go and things dwelled in the darkness.
The humans would come after it. They would hunt it until they killed it, never giving up. The behemoth could not allow that to happen, not before it had its vengeance.
Images of Vinnie flashed across its mind, like a bolt of lightning brightening the night sky. With the sight came immense pain. The loss the creature felt was overwhelming, the sadness devastating. It cried out, thrashed and kicked, and broke off a rather large piece of ocean rock that had formed a cliff over a ravine. The plateau-like chunk fell and shattered, sending smaller pieces into the cavernous crack where they disappeared like childhood memories.
Mankind was evil, the creature thought. A disease to the planet. They were unnatural—like itself. It knew it existed because of mankind, and now its creator—however unintentional—was going to try to kill it, as they had so many other wonderful things in the world.
But it had a focused purpose, a goal to accomplish before it took on the world. Vinnie needed to be put down, along with his goons, Johnny and Scottie. The behemoth would make sure they all suffered, but none more than Vinnie, the man in charge.
The creature fought its emotions, wanting all of mankind to suffer for the atrocities that they caused the world, but at the same time, it knew they weren’t all bad. In fact, most were good. It remembered being human, that part of it still very much alive. But at the same time, it was no longer only human. It was a hybrid, a mixed breed of creature that no other creatures would accept. It would always be alone.
The creature thrashed its tail and shattered an outcropping of coral reef, sending hundreds of small critters racing about, scurrying for new homes and for safety. It reached out with its tentacles and snatched up as many as it could.
The creature needed to get revenge for its former family, the ones it had once loved. It would kill all that tried to stop it from getting its revenge, from killing Vinnie.
But then what? What would it do and where would it go when Vinnie was dead? Would it really attempt to wipe mankind from the planet? It didn’t know.
